The year in cardiovascular medicine 2023: the top 10 papers in arrhythmias

Harry J G M Crijns, Pier D Lambiase, Prashantan Sanders

European Heart Journal, ehae189, https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehae189

This year, fascinating new discoveries, particularly in the field of atrial fibrillation (AF) and long QT syndrome (LQTS), advanced our understanding of arrhythmias. In this brief report, we emphasize this development by focusing on the ten most influential papers. We anticipate paradigm shifts in screening for AF, treatment of subclinical AF and LQTS.

The year in cardiovascular medicine 2023: the top 10 papers in dyslipidaemias

Lale Tokgozoglu, Carl Orringer, Alberico L Catapano

European Heart Journal, Volume 45, Issue 7, 14 February 2024, Pages 504-506, https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehad837

Our understanding of the complex relationship between dyslipidaemia and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) was further improved this year by exciting new studies (Graphical Abstract). The Copenhagen Baby Heart Study database, which included 13 354 umbilical cord blood samples and parallel venous blood samples from children and parents at birth (n= 444), 2 months (n= 364), and 14–16 months (n= 168), was interrogated to determine lipid parameters during the first 14–16 months of life, and their capability to predict high concentrations at 2 and 14–16 months.1All the lipid/lipoprotein parameters increased stepwise from birth to 2 months to 14–16 months.

The year in cardiovascular medicine 2023: the top 10 papers in heart failure and cardiomyopathies

Johann Bauersachs, Rudolf A de Boer, Shelley Zieroth

European Heart Journal, Volume 45, Issue 7, 14 February 2024, Pages 507-509, https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehad878

The year in cardiovascular medicine 2023: the top 10 papers in valvular heart disease

David Messika-Zeitoun, Bernard Iung, Helmut Baumgartner

European Heart Journal, ehae090, https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehae090

Like last year, we had the difficult task to select the 10 best papers on valvular heart disease published in 2023. We restricted our selection to publications in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Lancet, European Heart Journal, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and JAMA Cardiology. The 10 papers were chosen based on a consensus between the three authors, weighting quality, potential impact on clinical practice, and future research as well as expected interest for our readership (Graphical Abstract).

The year in cardiovascular medicine 2023: the top 10 papers in interventional cardiology

Emanuele Barbato, Margaret McEntegart, Tommaso Gori

European Heart Journal, ehae110, https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehae110

The year 2023 brought tremendous innovation in interventional cardiovascular medicine, with numerous publications from long-awaited trials that were designed to provide definitive answers regarding the role of physiology, imaging, novel devices, and novel applications of structural interventions. While the 10 papers presented below admittedly represent an arbitrary choice (Graphical Abstract), there are thousands of other ones equally worthy of mention.

The year in cardiovascular medicine 2023: the top 10 papers in diabetes and metabolic disorders

Francesco Cosentino, Christopher Paul Cannon, Nikolaus Marx

European Heart Journal, ehae112, https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehae112

As editors for the diabetes and metabolic disorders section of theEuropean Heart Journal, we have picked out 10 papers published in 2023 that capture the major advances and trends in diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We have focused on practical papers, i.e. identification and management of patients with, or at risk of developing, diabetes. There likely are many other papers worthy of selection as ‘top’ papers in the field, but we hope this selection can help cardiologists optimize management of these patients.

The year in cardiovascular medicine 2023: the top 10 papers in ischaemic heart disease

Juan Carlos Kaski, Rasha Al-Lamee, William E Boden

European Heart Journal, ehae113, https://doi.org/10.1093/eurheartj/ehae113

The articles discussed in thisViewpointwere selected by the European Heart Journal (EHJ) Ischaemic Heart Disease editors from all published papers on the topic in EHJ and the New England Journal of Medicine in 2023. The consensus selection was based on novelty and potential clinical impact and represents the view of the editors as to the relevance of the publications rather than a systematic search based on specific objective criteria.

The year in cardiovascular medicine 2023: the top 10 papers in thrombosis and antithrombotic treatment

Felicita Andreotti, Michelle L O’Donoghue, Jurriën M Ten Berg

Over the past year, there have been many outstanding contributions to the field of cardio-oncology, and the scope and depth of them are exemplified herein. The first to mention is the update by the International Late Effects of Childhood Cancer Guideline Harmonization Group on tailored cardiomyopathy surveillance recommendations for healthcare providers and childhood and young adult cancer patients, who are at least 2 years from the completion of cancer therapy, which included anthracyclines and/or radiation therapy (RT) with heart exposure.
