Overwatch 2: Genji Character Guide (Best Tips & Strategies) (2024)

Overwatch 2 has launched, and Genji is back as a playable Hero. Genji has a tragic tail of how he joined Overwatch as he was turned into a Cyborg after his brother Hanzo nearly killed him. Genji is a Damage Hero, a class designed with a high damage output to take out enemies. While some Heroes are getting reworks in Overwatch 2, Genji is a returning Hero who didn't have many significant changes. In the sequel, his base appearance has changed a bit, as he is sporting some nice black pants and a bulkier layer of armor over his upper half.

Genji's Main weapon is the Shuriken which throws three projectiles that damage enemies. Genji has four abilities that will give the player a leg up in close to medium-range combat. The Cyber Agility Ability in Overwatch 2 allows the Cyber Ninja to climb and double jump on walls. Swift Strike sends Genji into a dash that is effective for a quick getaway or to knock an enemy out. Deflect sends incoming projectiles back at enemies and blocks melee attacks. Genji's Ultimate Ability is the Dragonblade, which does massive damage from close range.

A significant change in is the move to a 5v5 in Overwatch 2. A good rule of thumb, no matter which Hero the player is using, is to be aware of who is on the same team and the opponents. Genji is quick and best used to get in on an opponent at close range, land damage, and pop out to heal. Getting behind the enemies is easier with Genji and can give the team a leg up with the element of surprise. Genji is good at removing weakened opponents who need that little extra push to elimination, so seek them out and finish the job. To stay in the air longer double jump after dashing.

Best Tips & Strategies for Genji in Overwatch 2

Genji's Ultimate Ability, Dragonblade, is one of the best in the game, especially when paired with the right team. When Ana uses Nano Boost in Overwatch 2 on Genji, it will give him a 50% damage output increase, making the Dragonblade even more lethal. In addition, Genji's Deflect Ability provides the player with significant advantage against opponents with projectiles. He will counter any enemy with an Ultimate that is a projectile because he can reverse the attack back at the other team. Zarya, for example, has an Ultimate Ability that pulls the other team into a point for a few seconds and keeps them from moving. Using Genji's Deflect Ability, the player can turn Zarya's Ultimate Ability on her team.

Mei is the best counter for Genji as her Abilities slow him down and neutralize his powerful attacks. Another change to remember is the new Class Passive Abilities in Overwatch 2. Additionally, Genji will receive a movement speed bonus. As one of the first Heroes unlocked, Genji is an excellent hero to master and use to unlock the rest of the Overwatch 2 Roster.

This sequel reduces team sizes to five instead of six. Players will choose from one of thirty playable heroes and pick from one of three classes: damage, support, and tanks. PVP remains the core focus; however, Overwatch 2 now has a stronger emphasis on cooperative play with the addition of PvE modes - four-player cooperative excursions where players will take on different tasks against AI opponents.
