Chocolate and peanut butter pretzels make great back-to-school snacks, picnic snacks, and even camping snacks. This is one of my personal favorite easy to make snacks with few ingredients. I can promise you, you’ll want to snack on it all day long!

This is one of the easiest desserts you can make: all you need is a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to freeze the snack mix, and either your microwave or a pan on the stove to melt your chocolate and peanut butter.
What ingredients do I need?

🍬 What can I add?
- Homemade butterscotch sauce
- Caramel chips
- Chex mix for a sweet and salty chex party mix recipe
- The list goes on!
Before you can assemble the party mix, you’ll need to melt your peanut butter and chocolate. Thankfully, this is much easier to do than it might sound. We have guides for both!
How to Melt Chocolate
How to Melt Chocolate in Microwave
- Break or chop your chocolate into small pieces if you are using a chocolate bar. You can also use melting chocolate from the baking section of the grocery store, or chocolate chips, if you prefer.
- Add the chocolate pieces to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds on high, then remove and stir. Stirring is important, as the chocolate may not melt properly if you don’t stir it.
- Repeat by microwaving as necessary for 15 second intervals until the chocolate has only a few lumps. Stir to melt any remaining lumps.
TIP—Add a little less than a teaspoon of coconut oil or vegetable oil to your melting chocolate and it will melt more easily.
How to Melt Chocolate on the Stove
Some people prefer to melt chocolate on the stove as it offers you a little more control than melting chocolate in the microwave, but either method works perfectly for making this snack mix.
If you have a double boiler, you can use that. But, you don’t need a double boiler to melt chocolate on the stove. You can just use a heat-proof bowl and a pot.
- Add about 1 inch of water to a pot on the stove. Bring the water to a simmer. Set a heat proof bowl on top of the pot. You want it to fit suspended in the pot so it does not touch the water beneath it. This is important! You will burn the chocolate if the bowl touches the water.
- After it starts to simmer, turn off the heat and add your chocolate. Start with about half of your chocolate, let it melt a little, then add the rest.
- Stir gently as the chocolate melts.
TIP—Don’t let any water get in your chocolate! The chocolate will seize up and get lumpy and hard.
How to Melt Peanut Butter
How to Melt Peanut Butter in the Microwave
- Measure out 1 cup of smooth peanut butter and place it in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover the bowl with a paper towel.
- Microwave for 30 seconds. Remove the bowl from the microwave, and stir well.
- Return the bowl to the microwave and continue to cook in 30-second intervals until it melts.
How to Melt Peanut Butter on the Stove
- Add your peanut butter to a saucepan. Set the burner to low heat and gradually raise the temperature as you stir the peanut butter continuously.
- Once the peanut butter melts to the right consistency, take it off the heat quickly.
TIP—Whipped peanut butter, which you can buy ready-made at any grocery store from your favorite peanut butter brands, is creamy, fluffy, and a great substitute to melting peanut butter!
