Caramel Apple Bites Dessert Board – Bite sized pieces of fresh Granny Smith and Honey Crisp Apples with a homemade salted caramel sauce and classic caramel apple toppings. The perfect Fall dessert board.

Caramel Apple Bites Dessert Board

A beautiful dessert board that is perfect for fall. Crispy fresh apples dipped in a warm salted caramel sauce and then into classic caramel apple toppings. Instead of whole apples or apple slices, I cut the apples into bite-sized pieces that are perfect for dipping and serving. I use a simple salt water bath to keep the apples from browning and it’s ideal for serving. This is perfect for fall family nights or a party.

Preparing the Apples

  1. Dissolve kosher salt in water. The ratio is 2 cups of water to 1 teaspoon of kosher salt. I used a total of 8 cups of water and 4 teaspoons of kosher salt for a dozen apples. This amount will vary depending on the size of the bowls you use. I kept the green and red apples separate to display on board.
  2. Wash apples and cut around apple core by slicing the cheeks of the apple off. This will leave a rectangular piece of apple core that you can discard. Dice apple cheeks into 1 inch bite-sized pieces.
  3. Soak in salt water bath for 10 minutes, then drain and pat dry.
  4. Apples can be served immediately or covered and refrigerated to use later.

Salted Caramel Sauce

I used a homemade caramel sauce and it is absolutely delicious. I included the recipe and directions in the recipe card below, but a store-bought caramel sauce would work great too. You’ll need 2 cups of store-bought sauce for a dozen apples.

Caramel Apple Bites Toppings

Keep the topping small or crushed so they are easy to dip the apple bites into. Larger toppings will be too heavy for the bites. Here are some ideas for toppings:

  • Mini M&M’S
  • Mini Chocolate Chips
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • Rainbow Sprinkles
  • Chocolate Sprinkles
  • Seasonal Sprinkles
  • Crushed Peanuts
  • Crushed Pretzels
  • Crushed Butterfingers
  • Heath Toffee Bits

Supplies Needed

  • Large Marble Paddle Board – This board is beautiful and perfect for desserts or charcuterie. I have had to for years and use it all the time.
  • Bowls – small bowls for toppings and large bowl for caramel sauce
  • Toothpicks – or small skewers for dipping

To Make Ahead

Caramel can be made ahead and warmed before serving. Store tightly covered for up to 5 days in the referigator before using. Apples can be prepared the day ahead and stored tightly covered in the refrigerator.

Ingredients

  • 6Granny Smith Applesdiced
  • 6Honey Crisp Applesdiced
  • Pretzels
  • Marshmallows
  • Mini M&M'S
  • Crushed Peanuts
  • Sprinkles
  • Mini Chocolate Chips

Salt Water Bath for Apples

  • 2cupswater
  • 1teaspoonkosher salt

Salted Caramel Sauce

  • 2cupsgranulated sugar
  • 1/2cupwater
  • 1cupheavy creamwarmed
  • 4tablespoonsunsalted butter
  • 1teaspoonfine sea salt

Instructions

Salt Water Bath

  1. Stir kosher salt into cold water until salt is dissolved. Prepare apples by washing and dicing into 1 inch chunks. Soak diced apples in salt water bath for 10 minutes then drain and pat dry. This will prevent them from browning. Increase salt water bath ingredients as needed, maintaining salt and water ratio, to cover all apples.

Salted Caramel Sauce

  1. In a 6 quart dutch oven, combine sugar and water. Heat over medium high heat without stirring until sugar mixture is a medium amber color. This process will take about 10-14 minutes depending on your stove.

  2. Carefully add portions of warmed heavy cream to sugar mixture, about 1/4 cup at a time, stirring quickly. Mixture will bubble and expand very rapidly. This is why it's important to use a 6 quart dutch oven, so the mixture doesn't bubble over. Reduce heat to medium and let simmer for 2-3 minutes.

  3. Remove from heat and whisk in butter, vanilla extract, and salt. Mixture will be very hot, don't attempt to taste until it cools slightly. Adjust salt as needed and serve warm.

Caramel Apple Bites Dessert Board

  1. Place toppings in small bowls. Arrange apples, pretzels, and marshmallows on board around bowls. Serve caramel warm, reheating as needed. Use toothpicks for dipping.

Recipe Notes

Caramel should be warm so apples are easy to dip. Rewarm caramel in the microwave as needed.
