Ten years after the game's initial release in 2015, developer Supermassive's Until Dawn is receiving its first big-screen adaptation. Praised for its effective decision-based gameplay and its chilly atmosphere, Until Dawn was a hit with both gamers and general horror enthusiasts alike, selling over 4 million copies. The horror title has even received a recent PS5 remake for those who wish to experience this thrilling tale before its cinematic interpretation debuts.

Led by an all-star motion-captured cast, Until Dawn was one of the highlights of 2010s horror games. Actors such as Oscar-winner Rami Malek and Scream 4 star Hayden Panettiere elevated what could've just been another generic cabin-in-the-woods horror story, while the moment-to-moment decision-making offered a lot of crucial thinking on the part of the player, putting them in the shoes of the central group of lustful young adults who find their vacation interrupted by a blizzard and the unknown forces awaiting them in the snow.
Headlined by a terrific cast and crew who are sure to do the source material justice, here is everything we know about the Until Dawn movie (so far).

8 Does 'Until Dawn' Have a Release Date?
Until Dawn recently received a release date of April 25, 2025, hitting just a few months before the game's 10th anniversary in August. While the horror film won't see any direct competition in its opening weekend (at least as of writing), Marvel's Thunderbolts* will be hitting theaters the following weekend on May 2.
Until Dawn isn't the only video game movie opening in April 2025, as A Minecraft Movie will be released just a few weeks prior. While the two films are marketed towards very different audiences, A Minecraft Movie will have a broader appeal among moviegoers and avid gamers alike, which could see Until Dawn losing a small portion of its audience to the more mainstream family film.

The Until Dawn movie will see an exclusive theatrical release upon its release. Seeing as Until Dawn is a Sony-produced film, it's likely that the horror flick will hit Netflix down the line, after an obligatory PVOD release period, that is. Recent Sony films that have received similar release strategies include Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Madame Web, both of which are currently available to stream on Netflix.
6 Is There a Trailer for 'Until Dawn'?
At the time of writing, there is not an official trailer for the Until Dawn movie, nor has Sony released any stills from the film. With that being said, it's more than reasonable to assume that fans won't have to wait very long for their first look at the video game adaptation. Considering the film is only a little over five months away, it's likely that we'll have a trailer for Until Dawn by the end of 2024, if not in early 2025.

Much like the game it's based on, Until Dawn boasts an intriguing ensemble, with one returning face in the form of Peter Stormare as Dr. Hill, the psychiatrist who asks the player questions in the interlude between each chapter in the original video game. While Stormare is the only actor to reprise his role in the Until Dawn movie, the cast that has been assembled here more than makes up for the lack of original cast members.
Fans of Until Dawn are more than familiar with the names Ashley, Chris, Mike, Emily, Matt, Sam, Jessica, Josh, Hannah, and Beth. But who portrays this memorable band of friends (or frenemies, in some instances)? That is a slightly more complicated question to answer currently, as while the official cast of Until Dawn has been announced, the specific roles each actor is portraying have been left undisclosed for the time being.

Until Dawn will star actors Maia Mitchell (The Artful Dodger), Michael Cimino (Love, Victor), Odessa A'zion (Hellraiser), Ella Rubin (Anora), Ji-young Yoo (Moxie), Belmont Cameli (Saved by the Bell), and William van der Vegt (Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan). With a healthy mix of relative newcomers and familiar faces, Until Dawn is shaping up to have one of the more impressive ensemble casts of 2025.
3 Who's Making 'Until Dawn'?
Until Dawn is directed by horror veteran David F. Sandberg. Sandberg got his big break with the horror short Lights Out, which he then spun into a feature film for Warner Bros. Since Lights Out, Sandberg has directed three major blockbusters for Warner Bros., those being the Conjuring Universe sequel, Annabelle: Creation and both of DC's Shazam! films.
2 When and Where Did 'Until Dawn' Film?

Production on Until Dawn wrapped on October 4, almost two months to the day after filming began on August 5, 2024. The majority of David F. Sandberg's adaptation was shot in Budapest, Hungary, and in a relatively quick span of time compared to many films which take roughly three months (or more) to complete the production process. The quick shoot and fast-approaching release date also imply that much of the film's effects work is practical, meaning there will likely be minimal use of CGI in the film, which is always welcome in a landscape dominated by films shot predominately on green/blue screens.
1 Will 'Until Dawn' Be Rated R?

Until Dawn has not received an official rating from the MPA as of writing. However, it can be assumed that due to the original game's definitive M-rating, the movie will follow suit with an R rating. It's highly likely that the film will earn its R-rating specifically for blood/gore and strong language, should the movie try to replicate the hard-R tone of its source material, that is.
However, video game adaptations have had a complicated history when it comes to the MPA's rating system. Films like 2016's Assassin's Creed and Paul W.S. Anderson's Mortal Kombat went for a cleaner PG-13 rating despite adapting M-rated material. It's not likely, but there's a chance that Until Dawn could follow this trend to appeal to a broader demographic of teens who would otherwise not be able to see an R-rated movie without an adult present.
