Stowe Story Labs has partnered with Sidewalk Film Festival for the past five years to offer our Sidewalk Narrative Lab in Birmingham, Alabama. We are excited to deepen our partnership with Sidewalk to offer the winner of the $50,000 Short Film Production Grant automatic admission to the 2025 or 2026 Sidewalk Film Festival (based on needs/value to the project). Stowe Story Labs welcomes mentor Corey Trent Ackerman to the Stowe Story Labs $50,000 Short Film Production Grant Jury. Corey was the driving force behind FreshMaker Media, a literary management and production company, before joining The Cartel as Manager/Producer in the fall of 2016. He represents TV writers, screenwriters and filmmakers in all media. He began his career in development and production, serving in executive roles at Inferno Entertainment, Southpaw Entertainment, Ovation Entertainment and Red Wagon Productions, after getting his start as the assistant to Dede Gardner, then Vice President of Production at Paramount Pictures. Corey remains active on the producing side and Executive Produced TRUST starring Victoria Justice, and Melbourne-based filmmaker Justin Dix’s sophom*ore feature BLOOD VESSEL. He also serves as advisor to Jumpcut Media. Founded by entrepreneur and Wharton School professor Kartik Hosanagar in partnership with Silicon Valley venture studio Atomic, Jumpcut develops cutting-edge tools that enable entertainment companies to streamline the development process and make data-driven decisions with unprecedented intelligence and speed. Corey attended Townsend Harris High School at New York’s Queens College and holds a bachelor’s degree from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. Team Story Labs is thrilled to give a shout out to Stowe's founder and director David Rocchio (written by) and Stowe mentor Bertha Bay-Sa Pan (directed by) for the U.S. premiere of their wonderful film, GARY JR. It will screen at the Lighthouse Film Festival on June 6th at 5:15 PM ET at the Surf City Firehouse.The two-hander stars Danny Burstein and Chris Meyer. Another Spring shout out to our amazing alums! Please help us congratulate them on a few recent accomplishments.Slide 1: Another Tribeca world premiere! I’M YOUR VENUS (documentary, supervising editor and Stowe alum Dava Whisenant) screens next month as a Tribeca Spotlight Documentary. “This moving and timely documentary sets the stage for the investigation of the unsolved murder of Venus Xtravaganza, one of the iconic stars of Paris Is Burning, the legendary 1990 documentary about drag queens in the ballroom scene of New York City.” Slide 2: THE HUNTSMAN goes into production soon, adapted by alum Steven Jon Whritner. Steven shared a few thoughts with us about his experience:"I was commissioned by author Judith Sanders’ publishing company to adapt her novel. It was the second adaptation I had done for them, the first being a contemporary war drama so The Huntsman, a psychological thriller about a serial killer, was quite a departure. The book contained loads of internal dialogue from disparate points of view, so those were just some of the challenges adapting the story for the screen. The fact that I also agreed to produce the film has enabled me to be creatively involved throughout the film's production and development.” Slide 3: IN THE LAND OF SAINTS AND SINNERS, written by alum Mark Michael McNally, is now available on Netflix U.S. and U.K. Jeanne Taylor’s feature script SHOW UP was a Finalist in Flowfeel’s Great American Script contest. Jeanne workshopped the script as part of Stowe’s 2023 Feature Campus with David Pope.Slide 4: Matthew Minson’s second novel, CROCKETVILLE, is now available on Amazon and debuted as a top new release. This is a companion piece to his first novel SUN CITY, A HILARIOUSLY ADDICTIVE STORY OF REBELLION, which was workshopped at Stowe and was a 2022 Best Indie Book Award Winner for Humor.And don't forget, the Early Bird Deadline for our $50,000 Short Film Production Grant is May 20.
