Oconee Blotter: Taco Bell customer smashes cash register; woman loses $100K ring in Costco (2024)

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office reported the following incidents:

DAMAGED CAR: On May 24, Deputy Annessa Glenn met with a 31-year-old Bogart woman, who reported that due to problems with her car she took it to a mechanic only to learn that someone had cut the brake line. She doesn’t know who did it, but she does have a protection order on one person.

MARRIAGE FALTERS: On May 24, a 48-year-old Bogart woman reported that in February she met a man online from Norway. He had moved to San Francisco and after they met in person, they decided to get married. The man, who told her he was a welder for an offshore oil rig, gained access to her banking account. The woman said she went to her bank to open a CD account and learned she was the victim of bank fraud. She is in debt for several thousand dollars and her credit card was maxed out three times.

CUSTOMER ARRESTED: On May 25, Lt. Lee Weems was dispatched to Taco Bell at the Oconee Connector, where a customer, who appeared under the influence, came inside the store complaining about the time it was taking to fill his order. The 27-year-old Athens resident ripped the cash register off the counter, took it outside and smashed it in the parking lot. Weems took him to jail on several charges including damage to property and being a public drunk. Damage was placed at $24,000.

TRUCKER ARGUES: On May 26, Sgt. Sonyia Wallace-Burchett was dispatched to a tractor-trailer rig parked alongside U.S. Highway 441 in Bishop. A man and woman from Hattiesburg, Miss., were in an argument due to the woman believing the man was cheating on her. The 31-year-old trucker complained that due to the woman's behavior he couldn’t focus on his driving. They agreed not to speak to each other until they arrived back in Mississippi.

PLOW MISSING: On May 26, Deputy Collin Worsham met with a 73-year-old Bogart man, who reported he went to have a meal at the Dairy Queen on Hog Mountain Road and while he was inside someone stole an old walk-behind plow and an old rabbit box from the bed of his pickup. He valued the items at $1,200.

FRAUD DISCOVERED: On May 26, Deputy David Mattocks met with a 49-year-old Commerce man, who reported he discovered someone was fraudulently using his identification and credit card at Best Buy. The man said he went to the store to investigate and learned a man had been there earlier and made arrangements to have a new stereo installed in a pickup on June 1. Best Buy was able to access a video that showed the unidentified suspect in the store.

MEDICAL PROBLEM: On May 27, Deputy Dylan Pulliam responded to a reckless driver seen along Highway 316 near Highway 78. Pulliam located the car which had stopped. The car had been driven on two wheel rims due to flat tires. The 78-year-old driver appeared confused. After learning she was diabetic and suffering from low sugar, the deputy summoned an ambulance and the woman was taken to a hospital.

HIT AND RUN: On May 27, Deputy Dustin Mines met with a 23-year-old Cartersville man, who reported he was inside a store along Epps Bridge Parkway when someone hit his vehicle, then left. However, an unknown witness saw the crash and left a note on the damaged car describing the other vehicle and providing a license plate number. The deputy called the 64-year-old Statham man, who confessed he had hit the vehicle with his Toyota Tundra, then left. The suspect went to the sheriff’s office where he was charged with hit and run.

TWO BEERS: On May 27, a deputy stopped a Chevrolet Astro van with a tag that expired in 2019 along South Burson Avenue in Bogart. The deputy could see a bottle of Bud Light beer on the floorboard, which the driver pushed under the seat. The 55-year-old Norcross man, in a slurred voice, confessed to having two beers. He was charged with DUI, but the deputy learned he was a habitual violator who had his license revoked four times. There were also three active warrants out for his arrest. He was taken to jail.

DUI CHARGED: On May 30, Sgt. Travis Wooster was patrolling on Monroe Highway shortly before 1 a.m., when he observed a Honda Civic stopped in the lane of travel. The man appeared to be asleep with his head slumped over and his foot on the brake. The deputy pounded on the window and the man awoke. The man, who smelled of alcohol, stumbled out of the car, and admitted he had been drinking but he “was good to drive.” The 34-year-old man from Pullman, Wash., failed some sobriety tests and was charged with DUI.

CARD FRAUD: On May 31, an official with Watkinsville First United Methodist Church on New High Shoals Road reported someone had used the church’s account at Lowe’s to purchase numerous items at several stores over a period of three days. The amount of fraud was not listed.
